ASCENDING TOWER

MISSION
The Ascending Tower was a mission to fabricate a model, borrowing inspiration from the Struggle Within project and translating it into an architectural tower.

PROGRAM
Swooping from the compact earth, the Ascending Tower extends from the cliff’s edge to expose itself to the power of height and permit ascenders to participate in its rising vulnerability. Each platform extending from the tower’s spine allows ascenders to face changing relationships with height. Scaling the textured spine, Jill grapples with her understanding of height, just as Jenny absorbs her fear while bungee jumping from the protruding central slab, and Julie paraglides from the uppermost platform. Ascenders may also sense the intensity of height from the observatories, secured by the structural weaving, running up the face of the building. It is a matter of relative existence; the tower forces our position within a larger, specified context. The Ascending Tower is a powerful model of relationships, which acts as a way to expose human power and vulnerability.
