TRIAD AMPHITHEATRE
PROGRAM AND CONCEPT
The Triad Amphitheatre Complex is a formal exploration on how to occupy the apex of Île Sainte-Hélène. The equilateral triangles, making up the geometry of the three pavilions include a ballet and figure skating performance space, a market and food truck pavilion and a skating cabin. The three triangles are explored geometrically, to determine the design of each pavilion. In the spirit of Expo ’67, the resulting large scale spaces have the potential to accommodate many sorts of pre and post event activities, as well as a smooth, flowing and overlapping movement between pavilions. Benefiting from the artificial nature of the site, the center triangle is a new lake and skating rink, which establishes a connection between the three pavilions and allows for the possibility of outdoor activities all year round.
DESIGN INTERVENTION
The lobby, located in the skating cabin is the main point of arrival, where a wide path and a massive ramp converge toward the rest of the complex. In order to occupy the apex of the site, a portion of Pont de la Concorde is demolished and reconstructed to grade. To protect visitors from vehicular traffic, an elevated pedestrian bridge allows access to the market gallery level from the skating cabin. Reminiscent of the Canadian Pavilion at Expo ’67, the amphitheatre seats 12,000, and is designed to allow unobstructed views of the performance space. Circulation occurs under the amphitheatre and works in union to support the structure. After a performance, the market and food truck pavilion allows the possibility of post event activities. Taking advantage of its location at the apex of the site, the pavilion extends out into the Fleuve Saint-Laurent, allowing visitors to enjoy the panoramic view.
