VIBRATING PIXELS
PROGRAM
The objective of the studio project is to create a psycho-geographical focus for Concordia University’s Sir George Williams Campus. The project is structured around the design of a new student residence high-rise tower, located on the narrow site at the corner of Boulevard Maisonneuve and Rue Guy.
DESIGN
Aiming to reflect the dynamic student body and the vibrant downtown university campus, we propose an architecture of varying density and shifting floor plates, the program being structured following these dynamic variations. The floor plates push in and out of the core, creating a unique rhythm with cantilevered pods at both ends of the tower, which provide exterior terraces for the floors above, while creating mezzanines on the interior. These mezzanines allow visual connections between multiple floors, often resulting in double height space programs, such as a bookstore.
The upper pods and floor plates tend towards the sky, far above the surrounding buildings and terminating with an observatory. Towering above Concordia, the residential tower establishes connections with Mount Royal as it crowns Montréal.
